How to split the cost of a wedding villa with your guests

Updated Wednesday, 4 November 2026

Renting a villa for your wedding weekend puts everyone under one roof, but someone has to work out who pays what. Here are the fair ways to split it, and how to avoid awkward conversations about money.

Three fair ways to split it

Each method suits a different villa. Run the numbers for all three before you decide.

  • Per person: the total divided by everyone staying. Simple, and fair when the rooms are much the same.
  • Per room: every room costs the same, and people sharing a room split it. Easy to explain, but rough on whoever gets the smallest room.
  • By room size: bigger rooms cost more. Usually the fairest when the rooms are very different.

Take your own share off first

Many couples pay part of the villa themselves before splitting the rest, so guests' costs feel more like a normal holiday. Decide your share first, take it off the total, then split what's left.

Don't forget the nights: if some guests stay two nights and others four, split per room per night rather than per stay.

Say it clearly, early

Tell guests what their room costs before they commit, ideally on your website with the room description. Nobody should find out what they owe after they've arrived.

Collecting the money

Chasing bank transfers from twenty households is the least romantic part of wedding planning. On Marrythere, guests choose their room on your wedding website and pay their share by card, straight into your account, and you can see at a glance who has paid. You can also record payments made another way.
