Getting married in Santorini
Whitewashed villages, the caldera and some of the most famous sunsets in the world.
Santorini is the classic Greek island wedding: a ceremony looking over the caldera, dinner as the sun drops into the sea and a weekend of blue domes and white walls. It suits couples who want a dramatic setting and guests who are happy to treat the trip as a holiday.
When to go
The wedding season runs from late spring to early autumn. May, June, September and early October are warm without the peak-summer crowds.
July and August are the busiest and hottest months, and the summer wind can be strong on exposed clifftops, so ask venues about shelter.
How guests get there
Santorini has its own airport, with direct flights from many European cities in season. Guests can also fly to Athens and take a short domestic flight or a ferry from Piraeus.
Roads are narrow and parking is tight in the villages, so arrange shared transfers for the main events.
Where guests stay
Most guests stay in cave hotels and suites built into the cliffs in Oia, Fira, Imerovigli and Firostefani, or in villas inland. Rooms with caldera views book up early for summer weekends.
Ideas for the weekend
- Welcome drinks at sunset
- A catamaran trip around the caldera the day after
- A wine tasting at one of the island's vineyards
Good to know
- Many clifftop hotels have lots of steps, which can be hard for older guests. Ask about access when you book.
- Popular sunset spots get busy; a private venue gives you the view without the crowds.
